What is"SEO"?

Two facts:
  • There are EXACTLY the same quantity of even numbers as there are even and odd numbers together.
  • Only 50% of Americans are above average intelligence.

  • Those are both true statements. But they are also incredibly misleading. Which is why you should never hire an SEO company. Because the amount of cow poo thrown around to scare you and get your money is really insane.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It means that if someone looks for what you do then your website shows up so they can find you. SEO is not rocket science. You can do it. You can also mow your own lawn, paint your own house and and run cable through your monster-in-law's ceiling to install her new chandelier. You want us to teach you? Okay.

Do you have the time to do this and run your business?

  • IF Yes: Would like to hire you because you are more efficient then we are.

  • IF Maybe: Because you don't know how, We're more than happy to teach you everything you need to know.

  • IF You Don't Fix Your Own Water Heater: Then give us a call.

    We do NOT:

SEO Terror Tactics -- Or -- How Does Search Engine Optimization Work?

    SEO: The Long Answer

SEO or search engine optimization isn’t hard. What it is, is time consuming. It takes a certain comfort with technology (being able to login to your own website certainly helps). But mostly it takes time. Time to do the work and time to keep up with ever changing rules of the game. Unless you are Dan, and therefore completely technically confused by the difference between a title tag and a URL there is only one reason for you to pay someone else to do SEO for you…and it’s the same reason that you get a plumber in when your sink is leaking or a carpenter in when you want to put up a wall. It isn’t because you can’t read how to frame a wall it’s because you don’t want to, you don’t have time and you have better things to do.

Let’s face it why do I buy things from you? Opportunity Costs. I have clients that are bakers -- well I can bake cupcakes but I darn well don’t want to so I go and buy them from my local baker. I can build a wall too and a bookcase and plant a garden and mow my own lawn and use a stud finder (no real luck on that one yet *grins*) and I have done all of those things. Once. Because I wanted to know how. But I don’t have the time to do most of those things so I have a nice teenager mow my lawn and weed, I have a great handyman who fixes up my stuff and I walk to my local bakery.

Can I do your job? Yes. With enough time and energy and effort and sweat and pain I could. Am I going to? Not on your life. You know what you are doing. You can do it better than I can, faster, you’ve gone through the sweat and the energy and effort and time and YOUR TIME IS NOT VALUED AT $0 DOLLARS. So if it’s FUN for me to build a wall then that’s great. But every minute I spend doing that I’m losing out on my “opportunity cost”. (“the loss of potential gain from other alternatives when one alternative is chosen.” –Wall Street Journal).

So think about SEO and SEM and Organic SEO ) and Google Places (Which is now Google Business and used to be Google Maps) and Google+ and so on exactly the way you think about your car mechanic, your AC repair guy and your plumber. They exist because they have taken the time to learn how to do something, learned how to keep up with the new rules and laws and equipment, put in the sweat and energy and they can do it better and faster than you WHICH ACTUALLY SAVES YOU MONEY because YOUR TIME IS NOT VALUED AT $0 DOLLARS. It is NOT in-fact cheaper for you to print your own business cards. It is not cheaper for you to paint your own house…if it’s fun then it’s an opportunity cost that you choose. But you are CHOOSING to spend more money on something because it is worth it to you in the trade of enjoyment. It. Ain’t. Actually. Cheaper.

So in SEO there are three types of SEO companies. Honest ones. Dishonest Ones. Scammers.

  • Any time you get a call that says someone will maintain your Google+ page for $99 dollars a month. Hang up and block the number.
  • Unless you are spending more than $500 a month with Google AdWords if someone says they are calling from Google -- 90 to 10 they are lying.
  • Any time the people who host your website or register your URL offer to build you a website for free and then charge you $99 for their SEO package SWITCH HOSTS.

  • Here is another, great direct quote FROM GOOGLE about this:

No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google. Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings, allege a "special relationship" with Google, or advertise a "priority submit" to Google. There is no priority submit for Google. In fact, the only way to submit a site to Google directly is through our Add URL page or by submitting a Sitemap and you can do this yourself at no cost whatsoever.

Note that Google themselves show you, on that page, two FREE ways to help your own SEO.

The reason you hire an SEO company is not because you can’t do all the work yourself. It’s because it is time consuming. Doing it right takes time and keeping on top of it takes time. For most of my clients, who aren’t doing PPC (definition link here) I spend between 8 and 15 hours a month working on various aspects of their SEO.
By the way that Google page above – it has something pretty funny on it –

Be wary of SEO firms and web consultants or agencies that send you email out of the blue. Amazingly, we [Google] get these spam emails too:
"Dear google.com, I visited your website and noticed that you are not listed in most of the major search engines and directories..."

If you go the $99-dollar route best of luck and we aren't the right fit for you.
If you are trying to do it yourself and think you are saving yourself money you are wasting your money (and time).
Most importantly if you are a small business owner then you don’t have your own IT department to figure all this stuff out the chances are that you are ALREADY being scammed.
In-fact the best situation you could be in before hiring us would be that you had done NOTHING with your SEO because 85% of the time we spend the first month or so simply untangling you from things you’ve tried to do and haven’t had the time or energy to complete. You’ve put your trust in someone and you aren’t even aware that they have done zero work or that you don’t even own your own website. (That one also makes my blood boil).

I’ll go back to that mission statement: Our mission is to help every small business owner I can, as fairly and honestly as we can, because it sucks when you need help you can actually afford and you can’t get it. We aren’t $99 dollars a month.
We don’t divide SEO into little extra chunks to hide costs from you. (“Well it’s $99 for sitemap creation but we charge an extra $45 dollars a month to make sure your title tags are correct”) Ugh. Just Ugh.

We tell you what you need.
We are brutally honest about it.
We make sure that at the end of the day AT THE VERY MINIMUM you own your own stuff.

And frankly, the only way to really understand what we do and how we do it is to call us and have a conversation because not only is Your Time is Not Valued at $0 Dollars but just like every plumber fixes the right problems for you and the printer makes the right business cards for you and the construction company doesn’t build everybody the same house…your needs are yours and we need to have a conversation about what you ACTUALLY need.

Still not convinced, or just want to do it yourself? We'd be happy to help you do what needs to be done initially, and train you one-on-one to understand the dynamics and mechanism, and what makes good SEO, so that you can continue to maintain it yourself. We recognize that some people just want to be in control or learn new skills and we're happy to assist. We actually like people who like to learn new things.

Oh Yeah…I really did all those things I said about 19 paragraphs up. Email me directly jennifer@theprojectfox.com.com and I'll send you proof.
